Network Login FAQs

What resources are offered through the network?
Resources offered through the Network include word processing, Lexis and Westlaw, e-mail, Internet access, space for storing personal data, catalogs of the Miami Law Library, other UM Libraries and many law libraries across the country.

How do I login to the School of Law network?

When presented with the login prompt:

  • Enter your login name: {User Name:} then press the TAB key or click on the {Password:} box.
  • Now type your Password. You will NOT see the characters as you type them.; Press ENTER when finished.
  • Your login name is the first letter of your first name, followed by your entire last name. (i.e. John Doe c23456789 = jdoe)
  • Your initial password is your "C number" (c########) all UPPERCASE and without dashes.

Where are my document files stored?

Your default file location is "My Documents". You have the ability to save, erase, copy, and make subdirectories in this space. Anything that is stored here is private to your account. Remember: In order to gain access to your "My Documents" directory, word processing programs and e-mail, you must first login with your personal LOGIN NAME and PASSWORD.

Can I use a USB thumb (jump) drive?

If you are using a USB portable drive, please log out of the work-station, insert USB drive then re-login. The USB thumb drive will be assigned drive letter (D:\).

How can I access my email account?

Go to and click on the "Student E-mail" link on the bottom right of the website. Your e-mail address is: [LOGIN NAME] Example: See Tutorial on how to use the e-mail client

How do I forward my Law School e-mail?

Students are expected to read their Law School emails by using the email system provided to them by the Law School. Although the Law School allows students to forward their school email to another email service provider, it is highly discouraged. The Law School has experienced difficulties forwarding emails to other email service providers. On several occasions these email service providers have blocked the Law School or the University from sending emails to them. The Law School does not control how these email service providers manage their systems; nor the reason for blocking us. We can only guarantee delivery of email messages to the Law School email system. Unfortunately, this is a problem that other major universities are experiencing as well. Instructions on how to forward student emails to another email service provider can be found at the Law School's website, however, students may do so at their own risk. Click here to forward your e-mail.

Why do I need my UM ID or C number?

This is your official University of Miami identification number. It is also known as your "C number.” The Law School uses this number as part of your network login credential.

What software does the University of Miami offer to students?
