Professor Maria Elena Cobas Cobiella was born in Havana, Cuba. She has a law degree from the University of Havana, Faculty of Law (1983) and a Doctorate of Civil Law from the University of Valencia, Spain (2004). She also has a Master’s in Private Law from the University of Valencia and ADEIT Foundation, Spain (2004).

Professor Cobas Cobiella has been a Senior Lecturer (Profesora Contratada Doctora) in the Department of Civil Law at the University of Valencia, Faculty of Law, since 2010. She was previously a professor of law at the University of Havana, Faculty of Law, Civil Law Department, from 1983-1999, and full Professor (Catedrática) of Civil Law at that same institution beginning in 1996.

She worked as a Civil Law Notary in Havana, Cuba from 1992-1998, and she was the Director of the Department of Civil and Family Law from 1990-1998. In addition Professor Cobas was a Professor of the School of Public Health, Ministry of Public Health of Cuba in the area of masters and postgraduate degrees from 2000-2001.

Professor Cobas Cobiella is the author of numerous articles and publications in Spain and abroad. She has served as director of several projects of educational innovation and various graduate studies programs at the University of Valencia. She was Director of Law at the European University of Madrid, Laureate Universities in Valencia from 2006 to 2010. She is a member of the College of Lawyers of Sueca, Valencia.

Professor Cobas Cobiella specializes in civil law, family law, notarial law, immigration law, and issues related to bioethics and law. At Miami Law she teaches “Cuban Civil Law, Myth or Reality?”
