Pablo Bentes is a Director of International Trade and Investment in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson, LLP. Prior to joining Steptoe, he served for six years as a legal officer at the Appellate Body Secretariat of the World Trade Organization in Geneva, where he assisted the Members of the Appellate Body in the conduct of appellate review proceedings under the WTO dispute settlement mechanism. Mr. Bentes has also practiced law in Brazil.

In addition to his position at Steptoe, Mr. Bentes is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in international law and economics from the Instititut de Hautes Études Internationales et du Développement in Geneva. He is a co-founder and member of the ABCI Institute, an international think tank in Washington.

Prior to his assignment in Geneva, he was responsible for the international trade practice of Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and an associate with the international trade practice of Miller & Chevalier, Chartered, in Washington, D.C. and the head of the international trade practice of Machado, Meyer, Sendacz & Opice Advogados in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

He was also an intern with the Legal Affairs Division of the WTO. Mr. Bentes is a law graduate of University of Sao Paulo, where he also obtained an M.B.A. in Finance and Risk Management. He also holds an LL.M. in Comparative Law by the University of Miami. He frequently teaches WTO dispute settlement in official capacity-building activities sponsored by WTO, and is a frequent writer and speaker on international trade issues.
