6 Ways To Get Involved

1. Attend events: Make it to as many alumni events as you can. Events include receptions; reunions; retirements; Homecoming; Dean's Circle (if applicable) events; scholarship and endowed-chair events; and UM LAA sponsored events, such as the Minority Mentoring Picnic. Also, attend Law School organization events such as the H.O.P.E auction; the Race Judicata fun run; Barristers' Ball; and law review sponsored CLE, seminars, and symposia. If you practice outside of South Florida, keep in mind that the LAA travels to several cities each year to host receptions, and we welcome your participation.

2. Keep your information up-to-date: Notify the LAA Office when you move and/or change firms. Keep us updated on your promotions, awards, and accomplishments so we can recognize you online and in the Barrister.

3. Poll your firm and friends: Find out who the UM Law alumni are among your co-workers and friends. Then, make sure the LAA Office has their names and contact information on file. Invite them to join you in attending alumni events, and encourage them to support the Law School financially.

4. Participate in LAA sponsored activities: Mentor a law student or a student organization, or financially sponsor an organization's event, seminar, or publication. Encourage your firm to fund a firm scholarship.

5. Commit to an annual monetary gift: A check in any amount, e.g., $100, $250, $500, is appreciated. A check for $1,000 makes you a member of the Dean's Circle and the University's President Circle and entitles you to invitations to special events. Remember, the amount and percentage of alumni who contribute factor into law school rankings.

6. Volunteer to assist prospective students, current students, or recent graduates: Whether you graduated last year or many years ago, you probably remember that making the transition from law student to attorney can be a daunting process. Our students and recent graduates seek opportunities to speak with practicing attorneys to learn about different practice areas and gain a better understanding of various legal communities. If you would like to be a member of our alumni network, please complete the Miami Law Alumni Volunteer Form or visit the University of Miami's Alumni Association's volunteer webpage.
