Saturday, May 14, 2016 (4.0 CLE): Half-Day Mindfulness Workshop REGISTER
(9:00 AM  - 1:30 PM)

This half-day mindfulness workshop is open to beginners as well as advanced practitioners and explores mindfulness from a primarily experiential perspective. It offers participants a deeper immersion into the practice of mindfulness, and conversation and dialogue (on the science of mindfulness, and the integration of mindfulness into legal practice) will mark jumping off points so that the experiential practice of mindfulness may inform a more complete appreciation of its benefits, personally and professionally—and support an intention to develop a daily practice.

The pressures of law practice are growing, uncertainty is greater than ever, and the challenge of finding balance in a distracted and busy world seems increasingly elusive.  Yet, this is the work we have chosen for ourselves. And our profession is one that offers a path for doing good while doing well—a truth as real today as it was when we entered law school.

As lawyers are learning about mindfulness, they are looking for ways to bring it more fully into their day—and to immerse in mindfulness practices so as to deepen their connection to this ancient wisdom tradition—and to themselves.  One avenue is to attend a program at a mindfulness retreat center.  This half-day workshop is designed to offer a local, professionally connected opportunity to learn more about and immerse in mindfulness practice.

Open to beginners as well as advanced practitioners, the workshop explores mindfulness from both a conceptual and experiential perspective.  Conversation and dialogue (on mindfulness, the science of mindfulness, and the integration of mindfulness into legal practice) will mark jumping off points so that the experiential practice of mindfulness may inform a more complete appreciation of its benefits, personally and professionally—and support an intention to develop a daily practice.

In addition to traditional mindful breathing practices, guided group exercises include mindful listening, mindful eating, choiceless awareness, and mindful walking. This mindfulness training will help to:

  • More fully understand the essence of mindfulness practice—and how it differs from a relaxation practice.
  • Develop greater mental flexibility
  • Multi-Task (or not) with greater efficiency
  • Enhance decision making skills
  • Improve communication
  • Develop greater ease amid periods of uncertainty.

A special mindfulness practice, oriented around kindness, will be taught to help cultivate:

  • A greater sense of connection with family, friends, and colleagues.

Practical tips will be offered to help support ongoing mindfulness practice beyond the term of this training.
